Backyard Football 2011 PSP GAME
They just keep making these Backyard sports games for children, and though I would not say I never have any fun playing them, I wonder how they decide to give us something in the way of upgrades. I think these are all basically the same game, spun out again and again without much in the way of strengthening over the previous year’s iteration. Backyard Baseball 2010 is like Backyard Football 2010: it’s kinda fun and young’uns like it for a while, but the technicals are outdated, the gameplay is seriously flawed, and the extra small increases like power-ups do not seem to add much spice or flavor. Finding a way to abuse unbalanced gameplay mechanics never takes long, it is my first game of Backyard Football 2010 was 42-35, and the next game was 70-7. It can be fun to participate in the All-Star Game or even run through a whole season with your favorite team and favorite players, but it all gets very old very quickly.

At no time have I seen any improvement in graphics in this series over the past few years. They obviously use the same visual engine again and again and while I’m sure kids will not care much, it would be so difficult to sharpen things up a bit? The blurry, bland backgrounds and the generic, boring character models are jarring to the eye, and some of the animations are just plain comical. At least, although there is a good amount of consistency throughout. It is mediocre consistency, obviously, but it is still consistency. Designers give us half a dozen football locales right off the bat and a bunch of imaginary teams like NFL franchises, but it’s just not enough. Each field is found missing, and you never really get a chance to look around you, anyway. There really is not much else to say but I’ll add that the Xbox 360-version – which does not exist, I swear – probably looks a heck of a lot better. If possible and your son wants this game, NAB, that one.
The sound does not help. They are even using the same freakin ‘soundtrack from the second Backyard titles! I’ve heard that the gameplay music for many years and not only is it intensely boring, it becomes downright annoying, because it is so monotonous and never changes … ever. Sound effects often override it, so there is a clear trade-off issues and the effects are nothing to get excited about, just a few generic “tastes” when tackling and a few unique sounds associated with power-ups. Further, the game is surprisingly quiet when you hear a little in the way of your feet on the turf or hands on the pigskin. The combination of the monotonous music and uninspired effects certainly reminds me that I play a backyard title, but it’s hardly a positive thing. So you’ve got the commentators who are so incredibly lame and inaccurate, I can not imagine even six year olds laughing at their vague comments. They add something to the experience and only succeeds in causing the player to cringe.
Gameplay is simple and straightforward, as it has always been in this franchise. Basically, you just snap the ball with the X button, run faster with the R1 button, diving with Square button, switch players with the Circle button and perform special power-up maneuvers with the L1 button. As you play, you will have access to these unjust still entertaining bonuses, these include Lim Ball (the QB can not throw it), stiff arm, Laser Beam (super fast pass), Homing Tackle, and others. They have all worked fine, and they do all matchup a bit more interesting, but because of severe imbalance and flawed gameplay, it almost does not matter. The problem lies in the fact that although each character has a very specific set of statistics, they all seem to perform relatively equally on the pitch. I have seen evidence with Speed placements of only three or four stars fight Adrian Petersen’s running step for step, and it is just wrong. What is the point of having all these NFL powerhouses in your team if some random nobody will do just as good out there?
On top of that is ridiculous on the court antics of the players that are downright silly. Big tackle can apparently be performed from about a meter and there’s no way around it, you just flop on the grass, and that’s it. Of course you can do the same to the opposing team, so it’s not like I’m complaining, but it’s just so absurd. A dive is basically nothing more than falling forward (it’s as if you fall down instead engage forward), go to manually catch the ball instead of letting the PC take control is rarely a good idea, and running back’s moves are mostly useless. Most of the time, avoiding a tackle seems more attributable to luck than anything. There is no good way to push through the offensive line when on defense and your only chance to get to the QB is bombed off the corner. This actually works quite well on some plays, but because of the erratic behavior of gameplay, it’s hardly an advantage. There appear to be anything but zone options on defense and most games are for antenna showcases.
As a result, scoring pretty easy. Most long pass plays will inevitably work, especially if you have a decent QB, and because you can sprint for a while after catching the ball, 80-yard touchdowns are nearly the norm. On the back, it’s hard to run the ball, unless there are none in the immediate vicinity, as I have said anything at your disposal – as well as power moves like Bull Rush, which is pretty cool – really does not seem to work very well . All they have to do is touch you and you eat grass. The animations are stiff to the point of being very firm line of scrimmage and the rest of the animations may be too fast and jerky. Then you have areas that are so dull and lifeless – without a flock, it is missing something – you get no real excitement or tension during a fight. I realize the name of this franchise is “Backyard”, so it’s supposed to appear and feel as if you play in your own backyard (great as a framework may be), but anyway, you have to do better than this . No one will really care if they play at the castle or high school.
The bottom line is that Backyard Football 2010 is just another iteration in a long series that have not bothered to change. Perhaps it is a good thing for kids, but I have to believe that even young players can begin to notice a serious lag technical graphics and sound, along with physics and gameplay, there is near-on ridiculous. Sure, it’s easy to pick up and play, but in this case, it is not much of a plus. I would assume that this is the last crucial sub-par title in the series, but I’m not too sure. I get the feeling I will play next year’s rates with the same sense of boredom and disappointment.
