Turbo Tax Deluxe and state tax question?
I bought a house two years ago, and this year will be my first year of trying to do my taxes on my own. I am going to go out and buy Turbo Tax Deluxe tomorrow (I believe that is what I need, and not Turbo Tax Basic), but was wondering, should I buy the version of Turbo Tax that includes state taxes, or are those pretty easy to do once you have your Federal done? I do not have any dependents nor own a business or anything complicated like that. Before I bought the house, I was able to use the basic forms for Federal and State. I live in Oregon. Thank you!
I agree with Dave. It’s worth using the state software because there are some special adjustments that are made automatically when you do the state. Also, Dave’s right about mailing in the OR return. If all goes well, you can use the 2010 as a format for doing your 2011, and won’t need to buy the software.
One more thing, take the full interview (long method) for completing the return. You may be surprised at what items you can deduct if you’re using the Schedule A for the first time. And be careful, some of my best clients came to me needing to amend returns that were prepared using Turbo Tax. Good luck!
