make money writing short stories
How does one make money writing short stories?

And is it an easier route (if writing fiction for profit) than writing novels?

You have to sell to magazines and anthologies. Easier? Maybe. The big thing is that you have to sell more works than if you’re selling novels, as they bring in less money – but they take less time to write, as well.

The best thing to do is to look for a website that lays out resources for your particular genre. These sites usually list places that take first-print unsolicited work, as well as good agents for beginners and suggestions on how to get started.

How Women Make Money is an inspiring collection of profiles, anecdotes, and practical advice and guides that will help women take control of their lives and attain their financial goals. Whether you are starting a new business, growing an established one, supplementing a pension, working for extras for the family, or striving to fulfill a lifelong dream, this book will nurture your entrepreneurial spirit and give you the tools you need to achieve success. How Women Make Money, Inspirational Stories and Practical Advice from Successful Canadian Entrepreneurs, by Julie V. Watson, The Dundurn Group, Canada, 2004, $22.95. After a frenetic June, I finally found a few hours to sink into an armchair and give myself up to reading. And at hand was a new book about two things near and dear to me: women in business, and writing. I've been running a small business for about ten years now, and all the while I have been talking about writing a book-or perhaps several books. But it isn't going to happen unless several things change. And then I pick up this book by Julie Watson, relating not just her own experience transforming herself into a writer, but the experiences of women across this country as they forge their own way in the businesses of their choosing. Julie's own story is inspirational. At sixty, she is still pursuing her own dreams, and doing a remarkably good job of earning a living with her pen. Her writing style is as comfortable as an old shoe and you just know her advice and her suggestions don't come off the top of her head but from hard-learned lessons in her own life. If it is true that really good writers integrate bits of themselves in everything they write, then Julie Watson is an exceptionally good scribe. She is open and frank about the obstacles she faces. No hiding behind a mask for her. While Julie has always put family first, having a plan and following through on it has given her businesses focus and structure. Putting that plan in writing helps her v?÷®záG®ÿ¾Úx

On Writing Short Stories is a unique collection of original essays by seven professional writers. It is the only text of its kind to offer writing advice from such authors, editors, and instructors as Francine Prose, Joyce Carol Oates, Frank Conroy, Andre Dubus, Robert Coles, Tom Bailey, and C. Michael Curtis, with a foreword by Tobias Wolff. These experts give voice--voices--to a dialogue about the art and craft of writing short stories.brRespecting writers' autonomy, On Writing Short Stories does not offer a rigidly systematic apparatus for learning to write short stories. Instead it asks what makes a short story, analyzes various aspects of craft, discusses process and revision, and also pauses to wonder why people write short stories at all. It considers the importance of reading and of peer critique in workshops as integral components of the learning process and offers advice on how to get short stories published.brIdeal for courses and workshops in creative writing, On Writing Short Stories also includes an engaging selection of eighteen short stories, both classic and contemporary, for discussion and analysis. These stories stretch the limits of narrative fiction; reading them will help students create a scaffolding for the short story form. Writing exercises are incorporated to help students put the craft into practice for themselves. A list of addresses and editors of magazines, journals, and quarterlies that publish short fiction is also included for writers who are ready to begin submitting their work for consideration.

PFrom the PREFACE:/P PThis book is an attempt to put into definite form the principles observed by the masters of the short story in the practice of their art. It is the result of a careful study of their work, of some indifferent attempts to imitate them, and of the critical examination of several thousands of short stories written by amateurs. It is designed to be of practical assistance to the novice in short story writing, from the moment the tale is dimly conceived until it is completed and ready for the editor's judgment./P PThe rules and principles here presented embody not what I conceive to be right, but what the great masters of the short story have thought to be right, and what they have proved to be at least successful. I speak only as a delver into the secrets of other men; and if I seem arrogant, it is due to the influence of the company I keep. My deductions are made not only from the artifices and triumphs of the successful, but from the struggles and failures of the unfortunate as well; and I have endeavored to make clear both the philosophy and the application of all the principles so deduced.[8] Though in theory these rules are obligatory on all who essay the short story, they are frequently and knowingly evaded or violated by the masters of the art, whose genius is great enough to excuse their disregard of the conventions, or whose skill is sufficient to smooth over their technical lapses; but for the novice the only safe course is a careful observance of all conventions./P PTo the aspiring writer this book may seem to be merely a catalogue of Don'ts, the gist of which is, Don't write; but that is to misread me. Short story writing is not easy, and I cannot make it so, even if I would; but it is far from my purpose to discourage any person who feels the Heaven-sent call to write, and who has the will and ability to respond to it. But that call is but a summons to labor-and to labor the severest and most persistent. To one who co@6áG®záÿ¾Úx

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: 7. Other Literary Forms Doubtless, in greater or less degree all of the older literary forms have contributed to the short-story; but doubtless, too, those already adverted to have come more full-handed than any and all the others. The essay, for example, exhibits few points in common with the short- story, yet many short-stories (some of Hawthorne's, for instance, and some of Irving's tales) contain much essay material, while now and then an essay is cast in story form. The Spectator essay really embodied, now and again, so much narrative material as to make it a suggestive theme for study to-day. But all in all the kinship of the essay with the short-story is only that of a cousin.s The lyric also has made its gift of direct personal appeal, and all poetry has set up standards of lofty thought, deep feeling and graceful expression. History, for its share, has given accuracy of background and setting ? and so on to the end of the category. 8. The Perfecters of the Short-Story A full study of this topic would involve too much space here,8 but a few words may serve to point out the seven- league strides taken by story-writers during and since the second quarter of the nineteenth century. In 1819 Irving published Rip van Winkle?generally, but not universally, admitted to be a short-story rather than a tale. In 1835 Poe produced Berenice, and in 1842, in an article on Hawthorne's tales,10 he im- pliedly claimed for the short-story the right to be regarded as a distinct species. Though more or less perfect short-stories had been produced at intervals for many centuries, Foe's keen criticism incited many to follow irv- ing, Hawthorne, and the critic himself, thus originating a distinctive type of American short-story. 8 See The Book of the Short Story, Jessup and...
